MADRAS: The president, of rightwing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) LK Advani, Sunday charged that some elements in the ruling Janata Dal party and a communist party had conspired with the opposition Congress (I) to topple the government and bring about a ‘new political alignment’.
Referring to the recent political crisis in the country, Advani told reporters here that they could not succeed in their attempt because of the stand taken by the National Front’s supporting parties, the BJP and the CPI (M).
He said efforts to create a split in the Janata Dal had been going on for several months.
Advani said the latest attempt at a split and a political realignment had failed because of the ‘arithmetic’ in the lower house of Parliament, where more than 50 per cent of the National Front government’s support was from outside. Conspiracy by section of JD, Cong (I) to topple govt.
He refused to identify the persons involved.
The BJP is holding its national executive meet here.
Replying to a question, he said he did not think there was any deal between Prime Minister V.P. Singh, and deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal, but said there was a ‘serious lapse’ on the part of Singh.
Advani took exception to the manner in which Singh had acted, particularly the casual manner in which he had handled everything.
Commenting on Singh’s resignation as also those of several of his cabinet colleagues, Advani said he disapproved of the ‘politics of resignation’. It was wrong for the prime minister himself to resign. When there were already doubts about the stability of the National front government Singh’s action had further strengthened such doubts, he added.
Advani said he did not agree with political observers that the present political situation was in favour of the BJP as the people had given a mandate to the national Front to provide a government fora full term of five years. If the government did not last a full term, it would have an ‘adverse effect’ on even the parties supporting it, he said.
In today’s context of different states being ruled by different parties, it would be better for these governments to run their full course for people to come to a conclusion about run their full course for people to come to a conclusion about their performance and give another mandate at the next elections for the next five years, he added.
