Amritsar — The Union Agriculture Minister, Mr. Buta Singh, was on Tuesday summoned by the head priest of the Akal Takht, Jathedar Kripal Singh, to appear before the highest Sikh seat of Akal Takht before March 31 for the “punishment.”

Mr. Buta Singh had been declared ‘‘Tankhaya”’ (guilty of religious misconduct) by the high priests when the world Sikh convention was held here on September 2 last year along with President Zail Singh, who was later exonerated. Identical summons have also been sent to Sant Narian Singh of Kalerawale who was among the “‘Panj Piyaras’” who performed the ceremony before the repair of the Akal Takht along with the Nihang chief, Baba Santa Singh, on August 1 in violation of an Akal Takht directive.

Soon after declaring Mr. Buta Singh “Tankhaya’ the priests sent him a detailed showcause notice, to which there was no reply.
