PATIALA: Bir Devinder Singh, a former MLA and an activist of the Arjun Tewari Congress, was put under house arrest by the Fatchgarh Sahib police at his Dhillon Marg residence in Model Town. He told presspersons that no warrants or notice was served on him before putting him under house.
He alleged that this action of the police was a result of the visit of the Chief Minister of Punjab, Beant Singh, to Fatchgarh Sahib as he had also to address a meeting of those shopkeepers who had been uprooted from the old vegetable market of Sichind.
The shopkeepers had decided to observe strike Aug. 13. A protest dharna was also scheduled for the next day for the freedom of the Press and against the atrocities on people and he was to address this dharna.
He said that he had already obtained a slay order from the Punjab and Haryana High Court against his arrest in any district.
Bir Devinder Singh has sent telegrams to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Human Rights Organization and leaders of his party high command against his “illegal house arrest.”
