CHANDIGARH, India: Mr. Beant Singh, President of Punjab Congress (I) said that excommunication of Surjit Singh Barnala was unfortunate and uncalled for as he has done nothing to harm the Panth. Congress (I) leader said in a statement said that Panth could not in danger when government headed by Barnala was in power. The Punjab Chief Minister has done a lot to fight the violence and disruptive forces. Mr. Beant Singh observed that instead of issuing a hukamnama against the Chief Minister, the Jathedar should issue a hukamnama against the killing of innocent persons. Several members of the Congress (I) and C.P.I. and other members of Punjab Assembly called on the Chief Minister to support him and appreciated the “bold” stand taken by him in the wake of High Priest directive.
