HYDERABAD: It was yet another act of Army jawans going berserk in a civilian area at Bhavana Enclave near Bowenpally. A few months ago too, Army jawans had gone on a rampage in Langar Houz in the city.

According to local resident, about 40 member of the 93rd Field Regiment and other adjoining military units, most of them in a drunken state, when to the civilian area abutting their barracks and beat up everybody who came in their way with pipes, belts, and canes.

They even kidnapped a tribal woman, Shantamma, from her hut and tried to rape her. The woman has been admitted to hospital with bruises all over her body. They also attacked a policy party. The jawans virtually laid siege to the locality for nearly an hour. It was only after the police reinforcements reached the spot that they retreated into their barracks. While leaving, they carried away scooters belonging to sub-inspector G.Narsaiah and a local resident. It all began over a trivial issue involving Army officer Sandhu’s wife Premjit Kaur who asked her husband’s orderly Hari Kumar to beat the tribal children, who tried to participate with her children in riding their tricycle. The tribal children’s mother Eshwaramma, aunt Shantamma and neighbor Ramulu then came to Kaur’s house wanting to know why the children had been beaten.
