DHAKA: Government Leaders and political parties in Bangladesh sharpened their tirades against New Delhi last week, calling India a conspirator out to destroy its small neighbor economically and politically.

“We must unite and build a strong public opinion against Indian conspiracies,” said State Minister for Education Eunus Khan at a seminar in Dhaka. Other speakers at the seminar organized by the national “Resistance Committee on Farakka” and hte “Bhashani memorial council,” both virulently anti-Indian outfits, accused New Delhi of pressurizing Bangladesh into accepting its dictation. “India is drying up Bangladesh to bring to country to its knees,” said Capt (Retd) Kazi Kabiruddin, President of the “Bhashani Memorial Council.” Earlier. Bangladeshi environment groups said that the country’s coastal mangrove forest and its wildlife were seriously impaired by the low flow in the Bangladesh part of the Ganga river.

“We should go for a trade embargo against India to realize our legitimate share of the water, “cried out former navy chief Rear Admiral H.H.Khan, “India has a lucrative bilateral trade with Bangladesh and we should start boycotting Indian goods.” Admiral Khan told a meeting organized by Jatiyotabadi Gonotantrik Party (JAGPA).

The meeting suggested that Bangladesh should take the water issue to all international forums to embarrass India internationally. “There’ no point discussing cultural issues at the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) when we are being denied water,” Admiral

Khan said.
