NEW DELHI, India Gunmen shot to death a policeman Thursday in the second such slaying this week in Punjab state, police said.

Police identified the slain police officer as Chaman Lal and said he was shot aboard a bus near Ludhiana, 150 miles northwest of New Delhi, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

Three Sikhs supporting a campaign for an independent state in Sikh-dominated Punjab are believed to be involved in the attack, police told the agency.

Meanwhile, militant Sikhs in the holy city of Amritsar, 225 miles northwest of New Delhi, began continuous recitations of prayers in the Golden Temple complex as a prelude to their plans to demolish and reconstruct the sacred Akal Takht on Jan, 26.
