JAMMU (PTI): President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) L.K.Advani and more than 2000 party workers last week courted arrest while staging a Satyagraha to focus attention of the people to what they called deteriorating law and order situation in Doda. Advani and the party workers were released later in the day. They were arrested at Ranbiresh war temple on Shalamar Chowk for public breach of peace on the first day of the party’s fortnight long Satyagraha.

A BJP spokesman said they courted arrest in support of the demand for declaring Dodaas disturbed and handing the district to the army. An official spokesman said Advani who was kept in a makeshift jail of institute of engineers at Gandhi Nagar locality of the city soon after being taken into custody reached the guest house around 1700 hours.

The spokesman said other 80€ BJP activists including some leaders were also released from makeshift jails. However a BJP spokesman said that 2300 party activists had courted arrest last week. Advani was arrested along with Professor Vijay Kumar Malhotra Kalka Dass Vaikunth Lal Shanna and Delhi BJP president on Prakash Kohli.

President of J and K unit of BJP Chaman Lal Gupta and 27 MLAs from Delhi and Bihar were also taken into custody under section 107 and 151 of criminal procedure code
