NEW DELHI: It will be disastrous and suicidal if the Government unabashedly rushed through the Constitution Amendment Bill to put sports on the concurrent list.

‘Warning the authorities that the ill-conceived and hasty move will take the nation backward instead of marching ahead in sports, the Archery Association of India (AAD president, V.K. Malhotra, said, “Let there be a national debate on this vexing issue and this can be taken up along with the Sarkana Commission report,” here on Monday.

According to Malhotra the Government should not suffer from “false notions of prestige” and drop the Bill forthwith in the interest of sports and National Sports federations,

“In case the Government cannot drop the Bill for any reason it should at least refer it select committee instead of adopting these foul methods to capture sports,” added Malhotra,

Malhotra who is also the president of the General! Association of National Sports Federation suggested that the Government should concentrate on preparations for the Beijing Asian Games in 1990.

According to Malhotra it was rather baffling that the Government should have introduced the Bill in the Parliament with ‘out considering it proper to discuss it with the Indian Olympic Association (OA)and other national sports federation.
