ABOHAR (FEROZEPUR): The residents of Abohar, on July 31, boycotted the public function of Punjab Cooperative Department, jointly addressed by Chief Minister Beant Singh and Union Minister for Agriculture Balram Jakhar. They were protesting against the death of a local youth in police custody and illegal detention of members of Citizen Action Committee against police excesses.
An official spokesman said that B. S. Grewal, a DSP, has been appointed to probe the reasons of death of Inderjit Singh, allegedly in police custody. The situation in the town is still very tense.
However, the employees of cooperative department were brought here from other districts 10 make the function successful.
Meanwhile, while addressing the public meeting Beant Singh said that despite many shortcomings in the new Panchayat Act, the state government would conduct elections of Panchayat Samiti and Zila Parishad before October this year.
