NEW DELHI: The Congress faces major setback in the assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh and Kamataka, according to the findings of opinion polls conducted by the Center for Media Studies on behalf of the Frontline’ magazine published from Madras. In Andhra Pradesh. N.T. Rama Rao’s Telugu Desam party is predicted to win 175 to 180 seats against the Congress tally of 85 to 90 seats. In Karnataka, even bigger erosion of the Congress vote bases is expected with Janata Dal winning 85 to 90 seats against the Congress tally of 80 to 85 seats. ‘While the BJP may not make its presence felt in Andhra Pradesh, its score in Kamataka is expected to be 20 to 25 seats. With the predicted 30.5% share of the vote in Kamataka, the Congress is going to poll its lowest share of the popular vote in the state’s electoral history. The previous low was 40.4% in 1983 when the Congress bagged 89 seats. In Kamataka the survey was conducted between Nov.16 in 14 constituencies and was based on interviews with 2.662 voters.
