The 12 day 41st Sikh International Youth Camp USA, at Salinas, Monterey, California that was attended by 100 enthusiastic young Sikh girls and boys from all over the country and a team of 25 dedicated Counsellors, concluded successfully Aug.22,1993.
The participants learned about their Great Sikh heritage, history, Philosophy and Culture and produced Naam Simran. They were imparted training in Shabad Kirtan, Tabla playing, Public Speaking, Leadership skills within a micro Sikh environment. Paths such as Japji Sahib, Jaap Sahib, Swaiyeas, Rehras, Sohila, Slokas of the ninth Guru, Sukhmani Sahib and Barah Mah were taught to different age groups. Many campers opted for Punjabi and Art classes as well. Their recreational schedule included playing of different games, boating horseback riding, a full day Camp picnic, a Camp fire night and walks through the woods.
Together about 300 parents guests, campers and counsellors participated in a beautifully organized special Camp Dewan Aug.21,1993 at the camp site.
Campers gave a demonstration of what they had learned at the camp through Shabad Kirtan performances, speeches and Tabla playing. This was followed by an impressive Nishan Sahib Parade and delicious Guru Ka Langar.
About 30 campers were awarded very beautiful Trophies for their distinguished contribution to the camp. Sardarni Komal Preet Kaur (Los Angeles) and Sardar Manpreet Singh from Phoenix were declared to be the best campers. In Conclusion, the enthusiasm and spirit of Chardikala generated by the spirited educational, social and cultural experience of the Camp life touched the hearts of all participants, regardless of age or backgrounds.
In order to go forward, it is essential that campers, their parents and other interested families not only maintain but intensify and widen the network of active involvement in the future IGS activities.
