PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN: A strong earthquake shook a mountainous region spanning northern Pakistan and Afghanistan Sunday. There were no immediate reports of casualties, but officials said there could be considerable damage.
Seismologists in the northwestern frontier city of Peshawar and in the federal capital, Islamabad, said the quake occurred about 2:09 p.m. and registered 5.8 on the Richter scale. The U.S. Geological Survey, based in Reston, Va., said the quake measured 6.6 on the Richter scale. The quake’s epicenter was about 150 miles north of Peshawar in the sparsely populated Hindu Kush Mountains of Afghanistan. Quakes frequently jolt the region, from the central republics of the Soviet Union to the plains of India
