SRINAGAR: Army was called out in the violence-ridden summer capital of Srinagar in Kashmir on Thursday as a high level inquiry was ordered into the May 8 firing that left 16 people dead and 52 injured.
Curfew was imposed in most parts of downtown Srinagar while Twenty four persons were killed in the continuing violence in Kashmir.
A criminal case has been registered and three security personnel have been suspended pending the report of the enquiry headed by an additional chief secretary of the Slate government, an official spokesman told reporters.
The localities falling under seven police stations of Srinagar and some other parts were handed over to the army and curfew was imposed in view of surcharged and tense situation.
Officials claimed that the security forces opened fire on Wednesday in retaliation to the firing by militants in Khanyar locality famous for an ancient shrine of Muslims.
