FRESNO: A Fresno attorney is among three people arrested this week on suspicion of bribing Immigration and Naturalization Service officials in order to obtain employment authorization cards for clients.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sacramento has charged Fresnan Harbhajan “Harry” Brar and two legal assistants with paying an INS officer $ 92050 for 146cards mostly for citizens of India who would not have been able to qualify for them.
Brar who operates the Fresno Law Center an immigration law practice was arrested in Fresno and appeared before a U.S. magistrate in Sacramento on Thursday. His assistants Gurdeep Pattar and Kuldeep Pattar were arrested in Modesto and will appear before a magistrate
The eight-month investigation began in August 1990 when an INS officer in Stockton reported a bribe attempt. At the direction of the Office of the Inspector General the officer met with Gurdeep Pattar who allegedly offered her money for cards.
The case will be prosecuted in federal court in Sacramento. If convicted the three suspects could receive up to five years in prison on a conspiracy charge and five years for each bribery charge.
