Dr. Sawraj Singh, a laser and vascular surgeon, was recently elected chairman of the Washington Statewide Network for Human Rights. More than 200 human rights activists, writers, journalists and literary people from the Northwest and Canada met at Singh’s Ellensburg home Sept. 8, to celebrate diversity with ethnic foods, music and discussion.
The meeting included a series of readings by Punjabi literary figures from the Northwest and Canada. Singh, who is president of the Kittitas County Coalition for Human Rights, was elected chairman of the new, statewide network during the meeting. “Our message is that diversity should be accepted, tolerated and celebrated,” Singh said. “We will fight against any discrimination based on race, color, ethnic or national origin, accent, age, sex or socioeconomic status.” The group plans to establish a mission statement and a constitution in the near future.
