SAN JOAQUIN: San Joaquin is a small farming town in the Central valley near Fresno. Although Sikhs have been living in this town for decades this is the first time a Sikh has been elected to the city council. Bharpur Singh Daliwal was elected to the City Council Nov.31, 992. Out of 411 registered voters 40 are Sikhs. Bharpur Singh Dhaliwal received 125 votes. Mr. Dhaliwal was a teacher in Punjab and moved to California in March 1983. He worked as a Community Education Teacher with Central California Consulting Inc. in Kerman until August 1990. He has been active in the community and in the functioning of the local Gurdwara.
He has established his residence in San Joaquin and will work for the improvement of his home. Like most other Sikhs he is concerned about what is happening to Sikhs in India and he supports the right of self-determination for the Sikhs in India.
