NEW DELHI (PTI):The Lok Sabha (lower house of Indian parliament) Aug.18 passed the army (amendment) bill which seeks to provide certain changes in the army act of 1950 including abolition of field punishment and dropping of second trial after conviction or acquittal by a court martial,
Replying to a debate on the bill, the minister of state for defence, S. Krishna Kumar, said a high powered committee of the army was looking thread bane into other provisions of the army act.
He said out of the 22 provisions of the act that were sought to be amended, five were cosmetic changes, nine related to abolition of field punishment and substantial changes were being incorporated in the remaining eight.
