CURFEW was imposed in Dhow Canti 225 km from here after more than 100 military personnel of the rank of Captain and lieutenant clashed with local polities and civilians on Thursday.
According to reports reaching here from Dhow more than 30 people including Madan Gopal Pande an Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of police were injured. Five scooters one car a few kiosks and some houses were damaged. The Collector of Indore was asked to ascertain the extent of the loss. The clashes began at around 2:30 pm on Thursday and went on for nearly two-and-a-half hours.
Around 6pm curfew was imposed Curfew was relaxed only from 6 am to 12 noon on Friday. However students appearing for their examinations were permitted to do so.
The army men claim that they had been “ill-treated” by some civilians and that the police took no action in the matter.
According to reports irate army officials resorted to stone pelting outside the Dhow police station and damaged the doors of some houses.
Surjeet Singh Inspector General (Indora Zone) accompanied by their senior police officials has rushed to Mhow.
Chief Minister Sunderlal Patwa told newspersons in an informal chat that the situation could have turned more volatile had policemen not used restraint.
Unofficial reports say Dhow residents have demanded that the movements of army men by restricted. The population of Dhow is about 80000.
Although no case has been registered so far an intensive vigil is being kept to avert further violence. Civil authorities are keeping in constant touch with army authorities. No case is likely to be registered until curfew is lifted.
A similar incident had taken place in 1988.
