KATHMANDU, India: Five hundred Nepalese girls have been rescued from brothels in Bombay. India, English daily “The Commoner” here reported.
With the help of two Indian Social institutions in Bombay, learned that at least 1000 such unfortunate women have been rescued from the brothels in that city, out of which 500 are Nepalese nationals.
It is estimated that about 30,000 Nepalese women, some only 10 years old, were trafficked to Bombay and taken brothels.
‘Women traffic has become a social problem in the country. The traffickers usually deceive Nepalese women, most of them from poor families in rural or hilly areas by promising them job opportunities and marriages to well to do families in India,
Stiff fines and penalties are imposed on these women traffickers under the law, but the provisions are not proving adequate as deterrents, the paper pointed out.
