BOMBAY, Dec. 22, India: Indian army troops were withdrawn to their barracks tonight after a show of force earlier today to contain violence in tense Goa territory, state run All India

Radio said today. But authorities continued to send paramilitary police reinforcements into the territory where at least six people have died in violence set off by a linguistic row in the popular seaside resort.

The radio said the troops had been withdrawn to their barracks but would remain on alert.
