TOKYO Reuter: Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has said that his country will boycott the 1988 Seoul Olympics unless North Korea is made cohost of the games.
Ortega was speaking at a banquet in his honour hosted by North Korean President Kim I Sun in Pyongyang. According to the North Korean Central News Agency monitored in Tokyo.
“Our Nicaragua will not participate in the games if the cohosting proposal of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) is noised” he was quoted as saying.
Off and on talks have taken place between North Korea and South Korea on the North’s demand to stage some Olympic events. The North had earlier demanded all 23 events be equally shared by the two Koreas.
Kim said in a speech that his country would continue to do its best “to give active support and encouragement to you (Nicaragua) in your just struggle” against the United States.
The United States supports so called Contra guerrillas who are trying to overthrow the leftist government in Managua.
