PEKING Reuter: Chinese President Li Xiannian 81 and plagued by health problems has been told by doctors not to move too much a Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
The spokesman quoted Li as apologizing to Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega for not attending his formal welcoming ceremony outside the Great Hall of the People in Central Peking on Friday.
“My health is fairly good but doctors advise me not to move too much” Li told Ortega at a meeting in the Great Hall after the ceremony.
Li a veteran Communist Party Revolutionary was appointed President in 1983 when the post was revived after a break of more than a decade.
He toured five Asian and African countries in March but has rarely appeared in public in recent months because of health problems.
