TOKYO Reuter: A majority of Japanese now oppose nuclear energy development in the wake of the Soviet Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident last. April an opinion poll by the mass circulation Asahi newspaper said.
The survey showed that 41 per cent of 2300 people questioned opposed the promotion of nuclear energy.
It also said 67 per cent feared a major accident could occur at nuclear plants in Japan.
Japan has 32 nuclear power plants and plans to operate Newell over 100 by the middle of the next century. The Japanese authorities say they are confident that there will be no major domestic protest against nuclear energy.
