CHANDIGARH, India: The police arrested the All India Sikh Student Federation President, Mr. Harinder Singh Kahlon, from his native village Dakoha near Jullundur. The police spokesman said a number of cases including one of sedition were registered at Amritsar against him earlier. An A.I.S.S.F. statement issued from Amritsar condemned the arrest of Mr. Kahlon. Mr. Kahlon was wanted by the police and the police had gunmen opened fire on security forces in Harsha China, 10 miles north of Amritsar, A shootout ensued in which one suspect was killed and the other escaped, police said.
They said that the suspected gunmen also killed four people, in two incidents in the state Thursday night. Those killed included the ‘Communist Party leader in the town of Fatehabad, 22 miles south of Amritsar, and his 8-year-old son announced a reward of one lakh rupees on his head. According to police sources, Mr. Kahlon was immediately taken to some unknown place for interrogation.
