AMRITSAR: Senior Superintendent of police Azahar Alam escaped unhurt from a well-planned attack by freedom fighters near Tangra on G.t. road in Amritsar District last week.

Azahar Alam was traveling from Amritsar towards Jallandur in a bullet proof car and with armed escort.

Freedom fighters were waiting for him in between Tangra and Khilchian. They let loose a shower of bullets with automatic rifles but could not puncture the special tires with specially filled foam.

They also attacked the escorting gypsy jeep but could not do any damage because it had steel plates covering it.

The guards returned the fire but no one is known to have been injured, It is learnt that Alam’s car sped away during the firing to Rayya from where he took additional guard.

According to police spokesman the number of freedom fighters is expected to be 12 . It is also said that an Inspector police and a policeman got killed half an hour earlier at the same place.
