FAIRFAX, Va: A television program by the Sikhs in the Washington Metropolitan area has the distinction of being the first weekly T.V program in the United States,
The “Sikh Program” comes at 8:30 p.m. to 9 pm. on WNVC Channel 56. It started on October 16, 1988 and is run by Dr. Kamaljit Kaur Sethi a Medical Doctor who is an Associate Professor at the Georgetown University and is the Chief of the Division of Nephrology at the DC General Hospital.
The English language program gives Shabads, their meaning in English as well as programs devoted to children including interviews with them on issues of special concern to the youngsters.
The program, which does not have any commercials also, comments on other issues of interest of the community as well. Also included in the program are inter views with Americans as well as coverage of events such as the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.
Dr. Amrit Jit Singh Sethi the producer of the program is a businessman who has been living in the United States for more than a decade. He has an investment firm and is also a builder.
There are plans to add the recitation of Sukhmani Sahib to the regular schedule.
‘Sirmukh Singh Manka, the Secretary of Sikh Foundation of Virginia told the World Sikh News that the program is very popular with Sikh, expatriate Indian and American audiences.
Rajwant Singh, the Secretary of Guru Gobind Singh Foundation said the TV program fulfilled a dire need of the community in the area. He expressed his hope that such programs would be broadcast all over the United States and Canada.
