YUBA CITY: With the largest Sikh population In USA, Yuba City is ready and all set to stage the 2nd annual Vaisakhi tournament which gets underway on the morning of Saturday April 14th. It concludes on Sunday April 15th. The organizers, Sri Guru Nanak Gurdwara, Bouge Road are confident of its success
The response at the time of writing has been very encouraging. According to Harbhajan Singh Gill, one of the mall in organizers “there are more teams participating then last year.” Kabadd has attracted about 6 teams and overseas players like Bola, Jaggl and Swarna are expected. A Canadian team is also coming. Basketball has maximum number of teams (16), Soccer (men) (5) Hockey (9)(2 from L.A. and 6 from Bay Area.), Volleyball (8).
A well-known wrestler is also expected. Athletics to be going to be a keenly contested affair. A women’s soccer match is on the cards.
The weekend tournament should be a gala affair and spectator turnout is expected to be a large one.
Divided Into two groups Kabaddi, enjoying popularity with the people, in group An on Saturday Yuba City, with square off with Livingston, while Santa Clara faces Modesto later on. In the group B Live Oak will play Canadian players and neighbors Modesto and Livingston will find out who’s better.
In basketball three games are slated on the first day. The first game is between San Joaquin Rivals against New Edition. The field hockey will be conducted on round robin basis. Amongst the teams is Yuba Brothers (Yuba City) San Jose Khalsa club (San Jose) and clubs from Livermore, Marin Azad, Soccer kicks off on Saturday with an afternoon game between Guru Nanak Sports Club and San Joaquin. It will be followed by San Jose Warrior against Livingston. Volleyball features popular teams, Young Guns of Yuba City, Punjab Hawks of Stockton and teams from San Joaquin and Sacramento (tournament details in next issue).
