Mr Harmohan Dhawan, an hotelier won the Lok Sabha seat more because of his individual appeal than as a nominee of the Janata Dal.
Born on July 13, 1940, at Campbell pore, now in Pakistan, his family migrated to Ambala after partition. After graduating from S.D. College, Ambala, he did his M.Sc. from Punjab University in 1964.
In 1970 he opened a restaurant in Sector 17, Chandigarh, Chosen as an outstanding self-employed entrepreneur; he was given an award by the Vice-President of India.
Married to Satinder, Mr Dhawan has one daughter and two sons.
He is not new to politics. He was the President of the Chandigarh unit of the Janata Party for a long time and was nominated to the Central body of the party after his first attempt to get into the Lok Sabha in 1984 proved unsuccessful.
He has been championing the cause of weaker sections and agitated for amendments to the bylaws of Chandigarh.
Considered close to Mr. Chandra Shekhar, Mr. Dhawan is easily accessible and down to earth.
