PERTH, AUSTRALIA: Test against Australia Maiden test half century failed to save Australia from defeat in the second cricket test against West Indies on Tuesday.
The Australians, set a 404-run target on the final day, never recovered from losing their first three wickets cheaply and were dismissed for 234 with 25 overs still to be bowled.
‘The 169-run victory gave them a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
Pace Bowler Geoff Lawson, who suffered a multiple cheekbone fracture after being struck by a bouncer from curtly Ambrose in the first innings, did not bat.
Lawson, wearing a helmet fitted with a visor, had practiced in the nets as Australian wickets tumbled, but Skipper Allan Border decided that with so much time available to ‘West Indies there was no point in Lawson risking further injury,
Australia’s hopes of salvaging a draw after the touring team had taken their ‘overnight score of 331 for eight to 349 for nine declared were severely undermined before lunch by Patrick Patterson and Malcolm Marshall who swept out the first three batsmen with only 46 on the board.
