DHAKA, April 27, Reuter: India and Bangladesh failed to reach an agreement on ending cross border insurgency during two days of talks between foreign ministry officials that ended here today, officials said.
Indian Foreign Secretary K.P.S. Menon told reporters after the meeting that the two sides had differences but “there was no conflict”. Menon is the senior permanent official in the external affairs ministry.
They also could not agree on procedures for the return of Bangladesh tribesmen who fled into India when separatist Shanti Bahini (Peace Force) guerrillas stepped up attacks in the Chittagong Hill tracts early last year, one official said.
The refuges, who have told officials they feared for their lives, have refused to leave India.
