JAMMU, India: Governor Jagmohan’s address to the joint legislatures was marked by a boycott by B.J.P. members in protest against the use of official machinery by Congress (I) Muslim National Conference alliance during the recent Assembly elections.
None of the newly elected members of Muslim United Front participated in the proceedings. During the first sitting Assembly after the Governor’s address the two B.J.P. members Dr. Baldev Singh and Mr. Chaman Lal Gupta walked out of the House when the Speaker Rangeel Singh disallowed an adjournment motion with regard to alleged firing on B.J.P. workers at Hira Nagar on polling day.
The B.J.P. members alleged that government was not taking seriously the incident of an attempt made on the life of party president, Dr. Baldev Singh by certain Congress (I) workers. All seven persons arrested in this connection on March 23 were released in the afternoon.
Earlier in his 35 minute address the Governor said the government was contemplating to set up a screening committee to look into the credits of civil servants 50 years of age. No effort would be spared to weed out corrupt elements, he said.
