Dear Editor:
Canadian Sikhs are very upset about the recently released Misra Report by a Judicial Commission set up to investigate the 1984 riots in New Delhi, India, by the government of India. It is an effort to deny the massacre of 3,000 people, which was confirmed in the report, “Who Are The Guilty”, by the People’s Union for Democratic Rights and the People’s Union for Civil Liberties. It is a cover up for high ranking Congress. The Misra report has overtones of political interference in the judicial system.
As a result, the report has angered the Sikhs all over the world. It has caused further unrest instead of helping to heal the wounds. This denial of senseless killings could possibly lead to further violence.
By slapping the wrist of a few policemen and low-level Congress Party officials, it has legitimized the actions of friends of the Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi.
These actions are not befitting of the so-called largest democracy in the world. The unwillingness on the part of the Indian government to control atrocities and barbarism towards Sikhs by unruly mobs has been overlooked by many International Human Rights organizations, To camouflage it further is a clear provocation to the Sikh community.
