KARACHI Reuter: Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, who returned from a visit to London, renewed her demands for fresh general elections.
“We want general elections under the 1973 constitution as early as possible,” the daughter of executed former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto told a news conference.
Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), founded by her father 20 years ago, has repeatedly called for fresh elections.
President Mohammad ZiaulHaq and Prime Minister Mohammad Khan Junejo say elections will not be held before their scheduled date in 1990.
Bhutto failed to force the government to hold fresh elections last autumn, a goal she first announced to a massive rally in Lahore when she returned from self-exile on April10, 1986.
