Chandigarh — Former Punjab Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal has gone back to his party and is contesting from his old constituency. He is pitted against Congress (1) youthful candidate Jagmeet Singh Brar who has resigned his position as Administrative Member of the Punjab State Electricity Board to contest the election.
Jagmeet Singh is the son of a former Akali Minister, late S. Gurmeet Singh. After Gurmeet Singh’s death in 1977, Jagmeet was appointed General Secretary of the Akali Dal and was imprisoned for allegedly tearing the National Flag on the Independence Day during Parkash Singh Badal’s tenure as Punjab Chief Minister. Jagmeet Singh was released when Congress (1) returned to power and was put up against Badal in 1980 elections. Badal defeated him with a big margin. Shortly afterwards Darbara Singh appointed Jagmeet Singh to the prestigious position of Administrative Member of PSEB.
