New Delhi — The metropolitan Magistrate, Mr. Zila Singh Lohat, on Tuesday remanded to police custody, till June 13, Surjit Kaur, wife of Kartar Singh Narang, an income tax lawyer and the alleged king pin of bomb blasts conspiracy.
He also ordered that a lady police constable remain with Surjit Kaur during her police custody.
Earlier, senior prosecutor R. D. Sharma moved an application seeking her police remand on the grounds that some more arrests and recoveries were to be made at her instance. In her disclosure statement, she had stated that Kahan Singh and Mohinder Singh Oberoi, along with one Surjit Singh Tyrewala, used to frequent her house and work there. Nobody was allowed to enter their room. She had also said that she was forced to become an “amritdhari” by her husband.
Defense counsel Yog Raj Sharma opposed the plea for police remand on the grounds that Surjit Kaur had been illegally detained by the Punjab Police since May 28, and that nothing incriminating had been found against her. He also alleged that the disclosure statement was concocted.
Surjit Kaur is reported to have told the police that she along with her son, lovely, had left for Punjab by Flying Mail on May 14 and after reaching Amritsar had stayed in the Golden Temple complex for a week.
She said that the conspiracy to take revenge for the November riots was hatched during the “akhand path ceremony” held to mark the birthday for her younger son in April.
Surjit Kaur told the court that she had made no disclosure statement. She had however given the names of Kahan Singh and Mohinder Singh Oberoi to the police.
She said the Punjab Police had kept her under detention for 12 days in Ferozepur district where she had gone to attend the last rites of her son Narinder Singh who died on May 26.
