ISLAMABAD, Jan. 4, Reuter: U.S. Undersecretary of State Michael Armacost arrived in Pakistan on Monday for a three day visit including talks on an Afghanistan peace settlement.
He told reporters at Islamabad airport on his arrival from London that he would also be discussing other aspects of Pakistan’s relations with the United States.
Armacost, a frequent visitor here, is due to meet President Mohammad ZiaulHaq after talks with Pakistani Foreign Secretary Abdul Sattar and other officials.
Pakistan is Washington’s closest ally in the region and they cooperate in supplying arms to the anti-Communist Afghan guerrilla movement
A five year U.S, aid package worth 3.2 billion dollars ended in 1987, while a new six year program of 4.02 billion dollars in military loans and economic assistance is going through the U.S. Congress.
