WASHINGTON: The U.S. district court here is reported to have quashed summon issued to the Indian embassy by a nonresident Indian who had challenged the hiring of Fairfax investigating agency to unearth information regarding illegal NRI dealings abroad.
NRI businessman Lateef Khan had filed the suit against Fairfax and the Indian embassy in October alleging that the agency had illegally obtained or tried to obtain income tax returns of nonresident Indians in the U.S.
The Indian embassy told the court that it would not respond to the summon left at the door because embassies could not be treated on par with ordinary citizens and that proper procedure would have to be followed in action against them.
The court then quashed the summons, leaving the door open for serving the summons in proper form later if Mr. Khan so wished.
No new summons have been received by the embassy, it is learnt.
