GUWAHATI: At least 25 Army and paramilitary personnel were killed and 25 others injured when suspected NSCN extremists set off two powerful bombs that ripped through a second class coach of Tinsukia Mail early on Feb.25 near Nilalong station, about 200 km from here, 15 of them died on the spot while the others succumbed in hospital.

The bombs exploded one after the other in the second coach from the engine around 5:00 am when the train coming from Dibrugarh to Lumding was nearing the outer of Nilalong eight km from Diphu, near the Assam- Nagaland border, according to information received at the Rail Bhavan in New Delhi.

The mishap spot falls on the meter language Lumding-Dimapur section of the north eastern frontier railway in Karbi Anglong district in Assam. The train was going from Dibrugarh in Uppar Assam to Lumding in lower Assam via Dimapur in Nagaland. The entire coach was gutted in a fire that followed.
