CHANDIGARH: Five militants and two home guards were among = persons killed in Punjab since last night, reports PTI. Six persons were seriously wounded, among them five security men.
Ina swift action, security forces engaged and shot dead three militants in an encounter tonight after the three had gunned down two shopkeepers at Qadian town near Batala in Gurdaspur. One BSF jawan, Mr. Kehar Singh was killed and another jawan, Mr. Arjan seriously wounded in the encounter near village Buttar Kalan.
The security forces also busted a group of militants by arresting 13 of its members, Seven other ultras were nabbed and a big cache of fire arms and ammunition, besides Rs. 1.40 lakh in cash recovered.
The encounter was stated by the police to be a fierce one and it was still going on and it was still going on when reports last came in.
Those gunned down by the gunmen earlier were identified as Mr. Gopal Singh alias Papu a tea stall owner and Mr. Ashok Kumar, a Haryana merchant.
