Chandigarh — The President, Mr. Zail Singh, has declined to accept an honorary degree of doctor of literature, which was to be conferred on him at the annual convocation of the Punjab university here on Sunday.

This was disclosed at a meeting of the University senate here on Thursday morning by the vice-chancellor, Mr. R. P. Bambah.

Appreciating the gesture, the President in a communication to Mr. Bambah declined the honor while confirming that he would deliver the convocation address.

An honorary degree of doctor of law will be conferred on the former vice-president, Mr. M. Hidayatullah at the convocation to be presided over by the Vice-president, Mr. R. Venkatarama, who is also Chancellor of the University.
