AUCKLAND: India’s Raghavan Chandrasekcharan became the toast of all Auckland following his stupendous performance in the weightlifting competition of the xiv. Commonwealth games here on Jan 25th night.
Chandrasekharan, who won three gold medals in 52 kg class and set five games and commonwealth records, said that he hated school and began a job collecting tickets for the railways and having workouts in a local club.
“I continued collection but this time I collected gold medals instead of tickets from passengers”, said the amiable Chandrasekharan,
Chandraselharan was deeply touched by the gesture of the previous record holder Mckenzie, who presented the Indian lifter with the bag of medals he won in the 1974 Christchurch games.
Soma Dutta, winner of a shooting Broze, said here that it was her childhood desire of shooting tigers that led her to become a good shot.
“When I was young, I used to listen to stories from my mother about hunting tigers”, said Soma after winning at Ardmore range.
The diminutive 21-year old Soma is undergoing studies at the University of Texas on a scholarship.
