CHANDIGARH India, June 16, Reuter: Gunmen killed a village political leader and a companion on Thursday in continuing violence in the North Indian State of Punjab, police said.

Police in the State Capital Chandigarh said Bakhshish Ram, a former Municipal Chairman of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s Congress (l) Party, was shot dead while he sat in a shop in Nawashehar village.

A companion was also killed in the attack by two gunmen on a motor scooter.

Nearly 1,280 people have been killed so far this year in violence connected with the campaigning for an independent Sikh homeland. About 1,230 were killed in all of last year
