NEW DELHI: Supreme Court judge J S Verma was appointed Monday as the one-man commission to probe the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi with wide terms of reference including possible security lapses.

Justice Verma (58) former chief justice of Rajasthan and sitting in the Supreme Court since June 1989 is expected to commence the probe soon and has been requested to complete it within three months.

Tamil Nadu women’s Congress president Albert and general secretary Rama Devi alleged in a Statement Monday that police had no metal detectors at the Sriperumbudur poll rally site where Gandhi was killed and had scanned garlands and shawls to be presented to him with the naked eye.

Although on the hit list Gandhi had not been provided with adequate security they charged in a Statement they issued after meeting the state governor in Madras.

An official spokesman said the commission would submit its report within three months.

It was for the commission to decide whether it would hold sittings in Madras or New Delhi.

A woman was arrested over the weekend and it was discovered that the gun of one of the security guards killed with Rajiv was missing.
