NEW DELHI: No vegetarians are more belligerent and violent than vegetarians who tend to live a longer and healthier life, studies suggest.

Furthermore, the endurance of a vegetarian is three times that of a no vegetarian. A vegetarian is Jess susceptible to cancer and heart problems and is more fertile.

The findings also point out that the human body is not suitable for a no vegetarian diet,

A study of about 400 Central Jail prisoners in Gwalior found’ that almost 85 percent of the 250 prisoners who were none vegetates were irritable and belligerent. Almost 90 percent of the rest who ‘were vegetarians had a cool and docile temperament.

According to the researchers Dr. Jasraj Singh and Mr. C.K. Dabas these characteristics are explained by various nutrients in the blood which affect the brain’s ability to make certain neurotransmitters.

The no vegetarian nutrients release certain “excitatory” neurotransmitters which cause short temper while the vegetarian diet releases “inhibitory” neurotransmitters that help develop a docile behavior.

Wild life studies also support the findings. Flesh eating animals like lions, dogs and cats are known to eat up their own offspring in fits of extreme hunger unlike the docile herbivores such as horses and elephants.

A study of 25 men of the Hunza tribe, between the ages of 90 and

110 years, revealed that even in that advanced age they had normal blood pressure and cholesterol level attributed mainly to their lec to vegetarian diet.

Autopsy studies of Japan’s Okinawa’s have revealed that they have a longer life span and are more fertile because of their vegetarian diet.

Tenzing Norgay in his autobiography “Tigers of Snow” also attributed the remarkable strength and endurance of the Sherpas to the lactovegetarian diet of potato, milk and cheese. Impressed by the findings many international sportsmen are now switching over to a vegetarian diet.

Yale University conducted a comparative study of 116 vegetarians and an equal number of no vegetarians in order to find physiological reasons for the superiority of vegetarians.

It found that the intake of minerals and vitamins among vegetarians is high due to their greater consumption of fruits and vegetables.

A similar comparative study of British lactovegetarians with that of no vegetarians have shown that the former get more calcium than the latter who consume meat.

According to the American Journal of Nutrition, vegetarians have comparatively greater immunity to disease because they get plenty of such dietary fibre as are residue of plant resistance. These protect them against cancer and heart disease. A few doctors however, point out that strict vegetarian diet may result in lack of vitamin 12 some other proteins and nutrients.

Dr. G.S Huntington of Columbia University holds that human mouth, teeth and intestine are not suitable for a no vegetarian diet. His views are based on comparative study of the structure of carnivorous animals and human bodies.

According to him the carnivores have bigger mouths to tear and eat large chunks of flesh. Unlike the humans their teeth are elongated, strong and sharp and pointed to grasp and tear flesh. He further points out that the intestines of animals are such as to facilitate rapid digestion while that of humans are for longer period of digestion.
