Booze scan cost millions of dollars

MONTREAL: At least 200,000 cases of illegal liquor worth S16 million Canadian have been trucked into Canada in the last 12 months by smugglers who buy from small bottlers in the United States. Taking advantage of tax procedures at Canada customs, where export documents are often not verified until months after a shipment has passed; smugglers have kept up a steady traffic in illegal booze with as many as 10 truckloads a week. Quebec estimates it lost between $100 million and $300 million in tax revenues whereas Ontario’s loss is estimated at $335 million.

TORONTO: Ontario’s social contracts three-year wage freeze will lead to a brain drain. Bill Graham, president of the University of Toronto’s faculty association has already lost some of its brightest young professors to better paying jobs. University officials are worried about how to retain their good faculty.

$6.70 minimum wage rate in Ontario

TORONTO: Ontario’s’ labor minister said that women will benefit most when the minimum wage for Ontario workers climbs by 5.5% to $6.70 an hour. Ontario already has the highest minimum wage in Canada al $6.35 per hour. These hikes may mean that 20,000 people will no longer be forced to rely on the food bank.
