BUENOS AIRES, Argentina— A man suspected of being Nazi war criminal Walter Kutschmann was held today pending a ruling on his extradition.
Federal Judge Fernando Archimbal ruled late Friday that the suspect, who claims he is another person, should remain in jail until a decision can be reached on whether to extradite him to West Germany.
Argentina Jewish groups Friday praised the arrest of the suspect, who was detained in Argentina two years ago but was released after a hearing at which he claimed to be a Spanish immigrant named Pedro Ricardo Olmo.
Kutschmann is accused of taking part in an operation that killed 1,500 Jews in a plan to liquidate 5,000 university professors and intellectual leaders.
The suspect was arrested Thursday by Argentina police as he got into his car in a northern suburb of Buenos Aires after visiting a friend.
