EMERYVILLE, CA: Rajwant Singh Sekhon ran a great race in Yuba City last weekend, when competing in the 1500 meters; he came from behind to win the race. At the 2nd annual Vaisakhi tournament, at the ‘Bogue Road Gurdwara, he was the athlete of the day. Also known as Raj he performed creditably in the event.

The youngest in a family of eight, he was born 27 years ago, in village Chamba Khurd, in Amritsar district to S. Sardara ‘Singh Sekhon and Sardarni Gurbachan Kaur. Raj, was a distinguished athlete at his school, Dera Sahib High School, Dera Sahib in Amritsar dist.

Being a top athlete, he was drafted in the Punjab Police as constable, in Jullundur, where his bosses were highly impressed with this lad. After arriving in California a few years ago, he has participated in athletics where in 1988 D.S. Bains of Yuba awarded him for 1500 metres. Rajwant’s dedication to athletic is shared by his older brother’s Kuldeep and Satwant. Another brother Kulwant has excelled in Kabaddi and Gathka at national level.

His training is very strenuous and tough. For this race, he practiced nearly 15 days after putting in 10 hours at work every day. For his physical well-being he acknowledges, his respected mother who fed him well in early years, his coach Harbhajan Singh, the P.T teacher and Balwinder Singh Pheedu the world’s top Kabaddi player. At the moment Rajwant trains his nephew Upreet Singh Sekhon.

The diet he eats is balanced consisting of meat, vegetables and fruits. Raj is a devoted Sikh, who keeps away from smoking and drinking, and prays to Waheguru to bless him and his wife Jagdish Kaur, with a son, whom he could turn into an athlete,
