Jallandhar: Punjab: The police fired rubber bullets and tear gas shells and resorted to Lathi charge to disperse a mob of students indulging in stone throwing outside D.A.V. College Jullundur on Dec. 5. Nine policemen including a D.S.P., four fire brigade personnel and a number of students were injured. A police truck, a motorcycle belonging to a constable and a moped were set on fire. The trouble started when members of Punjab students union forced the I.T.I. authorities to close the institution. They blocked traffic on Jullundur Amritsar Road, they were joined by members of All India Sikh Students Federation. When the students refused to clear the road police made a mild Lathi charge and burst tear gas shells. When this failed to have any effect, the Police fired rubber bullets. The fire brigade called to put out the fire from burning motor vehicles was heavily stoned.
