YUBA CITY: Yet another tournament has proved to be a great success. The 1st Vaisakhi tournament held on April 15th and 16th at the grounds of Guru Nanak Sikh Temple, Bouge Road, Yuba City made the organizers look forward to many more in the future.
‘As many as eight different sports were held, In. Hockey there was a major upset, when Yuba Brothers overcame the favorites San Jose Khalsa by a solitary goal in the ‘dying minutes of the game. Guru Nanak club (Yuba City) were declared the soccer winners after the Livingston lads walked off the field in the 2nd half, the score being even. This correspondent fails to understand why teams decide to walkout. After all the game has to be played ina sportsman like manner.
Basketball had a very long schedule as there were many teams. In the under 17 competition Young Guns( Yuba City) beat San Joaquin 6934. Ranjit Bassi of Yuba City with 23 points and Baljit Dhami (19) ‘of San Joaquin excelled for their respective outfits. In the senior competition Khalsa Club (Live Oak) narrowly beat San Joa‘quin 5755, Parminder Bains had 18 points playing for Khalsa Club.
In the ever popular Kabaddi competition in the junior section Yuba City won handsomely against Livingston 5438, The half time lead was 3415, In the senior Kabaddi played on league basis Santa Clara were the winners with 4 points, Yuba City came next with 2 points and Livingston failed to match any victory. For Santa Clara, Pala was their top raider and in their defense, Zora, Iqbal, Kulwant, and Santokh were outstanding. For Livingston
Iyoti proved to be a good raider. The scores were Santa Clara, (50) beat Livingston (22) Halftime 3516, Yuba City (48) beat Santa Clara (22).
In volleyball Sacramento the favorites beat Bud Boys (Yuba City) in a tame affair. In the semifinals Sacramento overcame stiff ‘opposition from Yuba City, in a game which was thrilling and a delight to watch.
The field and track events had very promising youngsters on view. Bobby Deol of Livingston after performing so well at Modesto continued in the same spirit. He ‘won the 100M followed by Tajinder Nahal in 2nd place. In the 400M Dilbagh Sandhu was the winner to be followed by Tarsem SIngh. These two again repeated it in the 150M.
In weightlifting Baljit Singh weighing 137Ibs lifted 210lbs to be declared the winner, Ashok Pandit weighing 175Ibs lifted 235 was the runner up. Baljit was the winner because he weighed less than Ashok.
Satbirdefeated Ashok Kumar by 1 falls in three minutes to claim the wrestling title.
The prizes were distributed by Chanchal Singh, Rai Gurdial Singh Thira, and Mohinder Singh Bains. Also honored on the occasion were Harbhajan Singh Johal and Nirmal Shergill of Punjabi Radio in Yuba City. Harbhajan Gill and Ranjit Johal the chief organizers deserve praise for the tournament success. The Gurdwara management committee of Guru Nanak Sikh Temple, Bouge Road have set a good example of a collective community with great visions of a grand future, WSN understands that a multipurpose hall is in the pipeline and it may be ready by next year.
